A Look at the Basic Types of Oral Surgery

    Last updated 4 days ago

Oral surgery refers to any surgical technique intended to promote oral health. There are a wide range of oral surgery procedures available to patients. If your dentist detects a problem, he might refer you to a specialist, such as a periodontist, for surgical intervention. Before undergoing any type of oral surgery, talk to the dentist about how you can prepare, what will happen during the procedure, and what you can expect afterward. Some of the most common types of oral surgery include tooth extractions, dental implants, and crown lengthening.

    Tooth Extraction
Whenever possible, dentists attempt to save the natural tooth. Sometimes, however, the damage is too severe and the tooth must be removed. Your periodontist might recommend tooth extraction if your teeth suffer from root fracture or extensive decay. Tooth extraction is also used for impacted wisdom teeth. After taking x-rays of your mouth and evaluating the situation, the dentist administers an anesthetic. During a simple extraction, the tooth may be removed after it is loosened with a special instrument. Some surgical extractions require a small incision, as the periodontist may need to remove small portions of the bone in the area.

    Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implants are becoming increasingly popular. Your dentist might recommend this surgery if you have missing teeth. The periodontist surgically places an implant directly into your jawbone, after which you’ll wait for the bone to fuse to the implant. Later, you’ll receive a crown on top of the implant. This crown looks and functions just like your natural teeth.

    Crown Lengthening
If you have teeth that appear too short because you have an overdeveloped gum line, your periodontist might recommend a crown lengthening procedure. This is a simple surgery in which the dentist reshapes the gum line to restore a more pleasing appearance. Crown lengthening can also be used if you need a bridge or another kind of cosmetic restoration.
